The 2020 Panini Select UEFA Euro Preview is yet another release impacted by Covid-19. The tournament itself was postponed by one year until 2021 because of the pandemic, just three months before it was due to take place in 12 cities in 12 different UEFA countries.

That hasn’t stopped Panini from releasing a UEFA Euro themed hobby box, packed to the brim with shiny parallels and autographs from some of the biggest names in the game.

2020 Panini Select UEFA Euro Preview: Review

The 2020 Panini Select UEFA Euro Preview is slightly disappointing, through no real fault of the manufacturer. It doesn’t have a full list of players that will be competing, while the tournament itself has been delayed until June 2021.

What it does offer is one of the better selections of internationally branded cards, as well as numerous signed options that come with player patches and other game-worn memorabilia.

It’s a slightly muted release in a strange year for sport, looking at a tournament that won’t take place in 2020.

2020 Panini Select UEFA Euro Preview: Info

  • Release Date: September 23, 2020

It was supposed to be a 300-card base set made up of three tiers of 100 cards each, with each tier having its own distinct design and parallel scheme. The Terrace set and the Field Level set have 100 each, with the Mezzanine release having 76 only.

In terms of rarity, Terrace is the most common, followed by Mezzanine and Field Level.

  • Terrace Parallels: Silver, Tiger, Tri-Color, Zebra, Blue (/225), Maroon (/165), Orange (/125), Purple (/79), Camo (/60), Tie-Dye (/25), Gold (/10), Green (/5), Black Mosaic (1/1)
  • Mezzanine Parallels: Silver, Tri-Color, Tiger, Zebra, Light Blue (/175), Neon Green (/149), Pink (/99), Red (/65), Camo (/49), Tie-Dye (/25), Gold (/10), Green (/5), Black (1/1)
  • Field Level Parallels: Silver, Tiger, Tri-Color, Zebra, White (/60), Copper (/49), Camo (/25), Tie-Dye (/25), Gold (/10), Green (/5), Black (1/1)

The set contains all national teams that qualified for the event based on group play, but not the final four playoff teams. In other words, it’s only 20 out of the 24, which is slightly disappointing if you were hoping for a full collection.

2020 Panini Select UEFA Euro Preview: Guide

Much depends on the 2020/21 season, and performances before the tournament take place. For example, Unlimited Potential cards highlighting the best young players in Europe. These special insert cards are exclusive to Hobby Hybrid H2 boxes.

Parallels for the Potential cards are as follows:

  • Silver Prizm (/25) – Hobby Hybrid Exclusive
  • Gold Prizm (/10) – Hobby Hybrid Exclusive
  • Black Prizm (/1) – Hobby Hybrid Exclusive

Of the players in the subset, Jadon Sancho, Kai Havertz, Matthijs de Ligt, and Joao Felix are the standouts and are already seen as the next wave of the European elite.

Historical Significance and Select Signatures are two major hits, including a variety of parallels and autographs. Past & Present and Tandems offer dual autos and some interesting combinations that have the potential to be worth decent money in the future.

For example, Harry Kane is paired with the legendary Alan Shearer in a one-of-one, while Cristiano Ronaldo shares space with Luis Figo.

Relics include Select Stars, Triumph, and Dual Jerseys

Inserts are found in the Access Denied, Equalisers, Top of the Class, and X-Factor sets, along with the self-explanatory Squads, Team Crests, and Visionary options which round the list out.

‘Access Denied’ focuses on keepers, while ‘Equalisers’ are for the best strikers. ‘Top of the Class’ has the best 20 players in Europe heading into the tournament with a number of Prizm parallels.

2020 Panini Select UEFA Euro Preview: Investment Advice

As always, it’s best to stick to some of the biggest stars that Europe has to offer unless you’re in the mood for an unfancied RC or two that has the potential to be flipped in the future.

Much depends on how the tournament goes, while the lack of a crowd has already led to a number of surprising results during the early stages of the season. It’s worth keeping an eye on the form of players from the Unlimited Potential set, especially considering the value of a typical Mbappe card in the present day.

One flaw is the lack of an Erling Haaland card, given his amazing goalscoring form in 2020. The Norway striker could still make it to the tournament, but the pandemic has stopped the last two qualifying games from being played.

Top players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mbappe, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane, Luka Modric, Christian Eriksen, and Virgil van Dijk make the cut, with signed options for every star player from the biggest nations.

Unopened boxes have slowly begun to pick up in price, and a winners medal would be sure to raise the average value of any of the squad members who play a major part in the tournament.
