Best Patrick Roy Rookie Cards, Values, & Checklist

Patrick Roy was one of the best goalies in NHL history and went on to have a short but memorable coaching career in retirement.

He played on the Montreal Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche, two franchises that would both end up retiring his number. He’s widely regarded as one of the three best goalies to ever suit up in the NHL and has developed a reputation as someone that isn’t afraid to speak his mind.

He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in just his first year of eligibility.

Roy continued signing cards well into retirement so there are plenty of modern cards that picture the goalie. However, there are only two genuine rookie cards from Roy’s 1986 season with the Montreal Canadiens.

We’ve outlined everything there is to know about Roy rookie cards, from the different options to an investment outlook.

Patrick Roy Rookie Card Value

The most iconic of all the Roy rookie cards, this 1986 O-Pee-Chee card is renowned across the hockey industry as very important. The aura around the card is mostly due to the career of the goalie pictured but it also features a classic design.

The three colors of the Canadiens — red, white, and blue — are all used nicely on the card. There’s a creative border around the picture of Roy and the Canadiens logo is placed in the bottom right corner.

1986 Patrick Roy Topps Patrick Roy RC #53

The Topps version of the card has the exact same design as the O-Pee-Chee edition, it’s just the American counterpart. It’s not quite as sought after but still a good option for those that want a Roy rookie card.

For those that don’t want to shell out the upfront investment required for the O-Pee-Chee version, this one comes in second as the only other official Roy rookie card.

1986 Patrick Roy Kraft Drawings Patrick Roy

While there are only two officially recognized Roy rookie cards, this is another option for those that just want to own a piece of hockey history.

This card came alongside Kraft products and features an image of Roy drawn on the front. The Kraft Sports logo is placed in the bottom left of the card.
