Pedro Martínez (10/25/71) is one of the most dominant pitchers to ever play in Major League Baseball. He featured for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, and the Philadelphia Phillies respectively from 1992 to 2009.

He’s a three-time Cy Young Award winner and an eight-time All-Star who’s best known for his time with the Red Sox. Martínez won the World Series in 2004 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2015.

Here’s everything you need to know about his rookie cards, with a full checklist, three great options, prices, and an investment report for the next few years.

Best Pedro Martínez Rookie Cards

We’ve looked at recent auction data to bring you a list with three of the most popular Pedro Martínez rookie cards.

1991 Pedro Martinez Upper Deck Final Edition Pedro Martinez RC #2F

Pedro Martinez upper deck rookie card+BUY IT ON EBAY

The most popular Pedro Martínez rookie card option by a fair margin, the 1991 UD Final Edition is a white-bordered card with a profile image of the player. At just $25 for a PSA 10 grade it’s a steal, and there’s little chance of making a loss. His first Major League Baseball card, it’s overproduced, which is the main reason why it’s so cheap. The quote located on the reverse has extensive info about his prospect years;

“As if Ramon Martinez was not formidable enough for the Dodgers, Los Angeles also has his younger brother Pedro speeding through their farm system. Pedro signed as a free agent in 1988 and pitched two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. He came to the United States for the first time in 1990 and went 8-3 with a 3.62 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 77 innings at Rookie-level Great Falls. Pedro, 5 feet, 11 inches and 150 pounds, is expected to throw harder than Ramon once he fills out. He started the 1991 season at Class-A Bakersfield and went 8-0 with a 2.05 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 61 innings as California League managers named him the best pitching prospect and possessor of the best fastball. He then went to Double-A San Antonio where he was 4-4 with a 2.08 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 48 innings at mid-season. Texas League managers named him best pitching prospect as well”.

1992 Pedro Martinez Leaf Gold Rookies #3

1992 Pedro Martinez Leaf rookie card+BUY IT ON EBAY

Part of a 24-card insert set honoring 1992’s most promising newcomers, a gem mint version of the 1992 Leaf Gold Rookie will sell for twice as much as a copy of the UD Final with the same grade. It’s an action card showing Martínez ready to pitch, and the quote on the back reads;

“Pedro made a rapid progression through the Dodgers’ minor league system in ‘91, having success on three levels. The Dodgers see him as an integral part of their pitching for years to come along with his brother, Ramon. Pedro’s 18 combined wins at Bakersfield, San Antonio and Albuquerque were tops in the Dodgers farm system in ‘91 as were his 192 strikeouts. At Great Falls in ‘90 Pedro was named to the Pioneer Lg. All Star team.”

1992 Pedro Martinez Bowman #82

1992 Bowman Pedro Martinez+BUY IT ON EBAY

Another card with a solid action shot, the 1992 Bowman is seen as Martínez’s ‘true’ rookie card. Despite the fact, it’s still cheaper than the Leaf card listed above, with a PSA 10 grade recently selling for just under $50. Despite being a second-year card, it’s part of one of the most popular sets from the 1990’s. The reverse has a simple quote which notes;

“Pedro made his Professional Baseball debut at Santo Domingo in 1988. He pitched at Bakersfield, San Antonio and Albuquerque in 1991”.

Pedro Martínez Rookie Card Values

As one of the best pitchers of all time, you’d think Martínez’s cards would be slightly more expensive, especially compared to similar players like Greg Maddux. They’ve held steadily, but they haven’t risen by much over the last decade or so.

If you would like an estimated value for any of his cards please email pictures to value@goldcardauctions.com (allow up to 72 hours for a response as we are currently swamped with requests).

Investment Rating

Martínez was a key member of the team that won the Red Sox’ first World Series Championship in 86 years, which should have helped to inflate the average price of his rookie cards. For some idea of how big he was back in the day, the six-year contract he signed in 1997 was worth $75m, making him the highest-paid player in baseball at the time.

He battled with injuries towards the latter stages of his career, but still put up impressive numbers as one of only four retired pitchers with at least 3,000 strikeouts and fewer than 1,000 walks in history.

A smaller stature never seemed to impede him, while his physicality and imposing nature caused trouble for anyone forced to go up against the pitcher. Charity work in the Dominican Republic has also helped to ensure that he remains well-liked in recent years.

Despite having fewer rookie options than usual, Martínez’s cards are plentiful and affordable. However, it does mean that there isn’t much scope for prices to rise in the short-term, so they’re not the best investment if you’re hoping to make a quick buck or two.

They’re a solid long-term investment, especially as we get closer to the 30th anniversary of their release dates. It’s worth remembering, they’re unlikely to fall by any significant margin, but they’ve hardly gone up in the last decade or so.

HOT CARDS: Luis Robert rookie cards

2010 Christian Yelich Bowman Chrome Draft Rookie Card #BDPP78 (buy on eBay)

Christian Yelich Bowman rookie card

Arguably the best Yelich card available on this list, don’t let the fact that it’s a prospect card put you off. There’s an on-card signature, MLB markings, and a good picture of the player with a bat in hand.

The reverse reads;

Resume: Collected eight hits in first 21 at-bats for Gulf Coast League Marlins in 2010 pro debut… Whacked .450 with nine homers as senior at Westlake High… Stole 28 bases.

Skills: Generates all-fields pop with quick lefty swing… Owns angular, athletic frame with projectability… Covers 60 yards in 6.75 seconds… Stick fielder with excellent range.

Up Close: “Committed to U. of Miami… Hails from the same Southern California high school that produced ex-Major Leaguers Mike Lieberthal and Matt Franco.”

You’ll also be able to find the following refractors:

Refractors (/500), Blue Refractors (/150), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

2013 Christian Yelich Topps Chrome Rookie Autographs #CY (buy on eBay)

Christian Yelich bowman chrome rookie card

This card has an RC logo and a prominent autograph, which makes it a great pick since Yelich doesn’t have a base card in the main 2013 Topps Chrome set. There are lots of refractor versions to choose from:

Refractors (/499), Blue (/199), Black (/100), Sepia (/75), Gold (/50), Red (/25), Silver Ink Black (/25), Camo (/15), Atomic (/10), Pink (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

The reverse quote notes;

“Christian enters 2013 having not played a game above Single-A, which might be the only reason he didn’t make the Opening Day roster. His hitting in Spring Training clearly wasn’t an issue. The U. of Miami alum batted a blistering .364 with a team-leading five home runs in 44 Grapefruit League at-bats, including a walk-off shot against Boston on March 11.“

2013 Christian Yelich Topps Update Rookie Card #US290 (buy on eBay)

christian yelich rookie year

The 2013 Topps Update is another solid investment option, even if it isn’t the rarest on our list. Update cards are growing in popularity, so it could be worth grabbing a copy while they’re relatively cheap.

The back reads:

“The University of Miami’s loss was again for the Marlins in 2010, when Christian turned down a scholarship from the ACC powerhouse to turn pro. There’s no doubt he was ready. In his first two full seasons, Yelich garnered the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year honors. He opens the ‘13 campaign at Double-A Jacksonville as a 21-year-old.”

Parallels:

Here are 3 of the better Christian Yelich autograph cards to hunt down and add to your sports card investment portfolio.

Key Christian Yelich Baseball Cards (Non-Rookies)

Yelich being the great player that he has quite a few other baseball cards that are worth a look investment-wise besides his rookies… let’s take a look!

2019 Christian Yelich Topps Dynasty Game Used MLB Logoman Patch #AMLB-CY

One day we dream of owning a logo-man card.

Topps Dynasty offers a variety of game-used patches with auto by Christian Yelich… some of the card prices are somewhat reasonable… the one above? not so much!

2020 Christian Yelich Mike Trout Topps Definitive  Game Used Dual Patch Auto /10

Mike Trout Christian Yelich topps

What do you get when you take two of the best players in baseball and put them on a card with an autograph and game-used patch of each?

#DRIP!

A stunning card this is valued well into the 4 digits… good luck adding this bad mama jamma to your collection bruh.

Investment Rating: 9 out of 10

Yelich was out in September 2019 after fracturing his kneecap and had to watch from the sidelines as his team fell to the eventual World Series champion Washington Nationals. He then missed out on being named NL MVP for the second consecutive season, as Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers took it by 45 points.

According to a recent profile by the Wall Street Journal, Yelich is hoping to become the new face of baseball heading into the new decade. He’s uniquely placed to lead the sport and to help it to grow in comparison to more popular options like the NBA and the NFL. It could lead to an uptick in his rookie card prices, especially if he manages to bring more mainstream appeal.

He didn’t require surgery which is always a big plus, and he’ll be rested in time to start the new season. Barring another freak injury, Yelich is sure to pick up more accolades for as long as he can remain on the field to support his team.

Christian Yelich Rookie Card Value

The Christian Yelich rookie card price can vary greatly from a few hundred to a few thousand.

We fully expect Yelich rookie cards to be one of the better cards to own over the next 5 years or so in terms of ROI.

Luis Robert Rookie Card – Best Cards and Checklist (TOP 3 CARDS)

Published

on

Best Luis Robert Rookie Cards for Investment Purposes

Luis Robert’s minor league career was one sick puppy. He batted a mind-blowing .312 with 35 homers and 63 stolen bags over a total of 200 games. If he can come anywhere close to reproducing those numbers in the first few years in the majors he will go down as one of the best Chicago Whitesox rookies of all time not to mention the MLB.

Robert was born in Havana, Cuba on 8/3/97 and clocks in at 6 ft 3 – 185 pounds. He has a sweet swing to go along with some speed (which will decrease as he packs on more muscle and ages… but his homers will go up as his stolen bags decreases).

He will join an already stacked offense on the North Side with Moncada, Jiminez, Edwin, and Abreu talked about loaded for bear!

We fully expect Robert to come out swinging and be given every chance to succeed in the big leagues. Based on his skills and what he did in the minors a rookie of the year award would not be out of the question by any means (and he won’t have to contend with Gavin Lux as he is in the National League).

With all these positives Luis Robert rookies cards are a hot commodity and should only get hotter once baseball resumes this summer.

Let’s take a look at the best Luis Robert rookie cards for your investment dollar!

2018 Luis Robert Bowman Chrome #21

luis robert bowman rookie card+BUY ON EBAY

If you’re only going to buy one Luis Robert rookie card his Bowman Chrome is a super safe bet. Not only does it look gorgeous but it is available in a variety of high-end parallels to include an autograph (the Blue refractor shown above is simply breathtaking).

Card Number: 21

Back of the card: “Fashioned 1.027 OPDS in Dominican Summer League… Went 12 for 15 on steals… Homered in debut as a Whitesox farmhand… Hit .401 in 2016/17… Lean, an athletic hitter with an assortment of tools… Creates an impressive launch angle and bat speed… Keeps hands inside the ball and extends through contact…Runs well for his size“.

2019 Luis Robert Topps Heritage Minor League #154

luis robert topps rookie card+BUY ON EBAY

A super good looking card featuring Luis when he played minor league ball for the Barons. We love the Baron’s wording in the top right-hand corner accompanied by the look on his face as he exudes confidence… this kid is laser-focused on becoming a star at the next level.

Card Number: #154

Back of the card: “Luis has been battling pro pitchers since debuting in Cuba’s top circuit as a 16-year-old. The athletic power threat was rated as the number 5 overall prospect by MLB.com just two years later”.

2019 Luis Robert Topps Heritage Variations: Refractor (#/570), Black (#/70), Gold (#/5; Hobby only) and SuperFractor (1/1) version

2019 Luis Robert Rated Rookie Rare Dollar Tree Card #264

luis robert rated rookie+BUY ON EBAY

How in the world can you not love this card!

The yellow border really makes this card pop and seems to say buy me now!

Dollar Tree released a limited amount of rated rookie cards and Luis was lucky enough to be featured in one.

They will show up every once in awhile eBay and they are super cheap compared to his other high-end rookie cards (for now).

If you see one on eBay make a bid or “buy now” if the asking price is reasonable… we have not seen a graded one yet but would love to see how one would look in a BGS Black Pristine holder with the clashing yellow… talk about DRIP!

Card Number: #264

Back of the card: “To say Robert enjoyed a breakout campaign season in 2019 would be an understatement. After not hitting a home run in 2018, the highly touted Cuban prospect smashed an incredible 32 long balls in 122 games across 3 levels. That power went with 36 stolen bases and a robust .328 average, cementing his status as Chicago’s top prospect”

Gavin Lux was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 20th pick in the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft from Indian Trail HS (Kenosha, WI).

  • Name: Gavin Thomas Lux
  • Date of birth: Nov 23, 1997, in Kenosha, Wis.
  • High School: Indian Trail HS, Kenosha, Wis.
  • Draft: Drafted in the 1st round (20th overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016
  • Ht.: 6’2″ / Wt.: 190 lbs
  • Bats: L / Throws: R

He was a top draft pick after being named the 2016 Wisconsin baseball Gatorade Player of the Year (hitting a mind-blowing .560 average in his senior season).

Scouting: Above average hitting, speed, and power.

With his plus speed and savvy, Lux can steal bases and has the upside of a 25-25 player. He has the raw tools to play shortstop, including quickness, soft hands, and solid arm strength, and he has gotten smoother at the position since turning pro. But he also has had issues with throwing accuracy, leading to 61 errors in 208 games at short in his first three seasons, so many scouts think he’ll wind up at second base.” – Who is Gavin Lux? Meet the Dodgers’ top prospect linked to the Indians in trade talks

Lux has done nothing but hit since the Dodgers drafted him. His rookie cards are a hot buy right now on eBay.
